This striking Egyptian Revival brooch, by the renowned Viennese jeweler Carl Bacher, c. 1875, features the sacred vulture goddess Nekhbet in vivid enamels. At the center rests a jasper scarab, set with glinting rose-cut diamonds and a glowing ruby eye. The reverse of the scarab is hand-engraved with hieroglyphics, adding a touch of ancient symbolism.
Egyptian motifs captivated Europe in the mid-19th century, inspired by the opening of the Suez Canal (1869) and ongoing archaeological discoveries along the Nile. Jewelers such as Bacher reimagined symbols of Egypt in precious metals and gemstones, as seen in this fascinating jewel. Here, Nekhbet, protector of Upper Egypt and guardian of the pharaoh, is paired with the scarab, symbol of rebirth and eternal life. Together, they form an expression of divine guardianship and regeneration, realized through the lens of 19th-century artistry.
