Neoclassical 14k Bacchus Dionysus Amethyst Ring

Dating to the turn of the 20th century, this striking allegorical ring depicts a young Bacchus (Dionysus) in Neoclassical style — a putto-like child with chubby cheeks, crowned in a cluster of grapes and vines. Opposite him sits a Maenad, one of Dionysus’s frenzied followers. Between the two figures lies a richly hued, bezel-set amethyst, a stone once believed to protect its wearer from drunkenness — the name “amethyst” comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not drunk.” Hand-chased and moulded with remarkable detail in warm, rosy 14k yellow gold, this exceptional ring is currently a size 8.
