This exceptional early Victorian “D’un Ami” plaque was once a stickpin, now beautifully reimagined as a necklace. Hand fabricated in 18k gold, the flowing ribbon-shaped plaque is adorned with twinkling rose cut diamond lettering floating on a vibrant blue guilloche enamel ground.
Reverse reads, “Admiral Sir W. Lake K.C.B. Obit. 18 Feb 1847”. This enamel ribbon was likely a memorial or tribute piece commissioned in his honor. The French phrase "D’un Ami," meaning "from a friend", suggests it was gifted by someone close to him.
Admiral Sir Willoughby Thomas Lake KCB (8 January 1773 - 18 February 1847) was a distinguished Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief of the North American Station and was promoted to Admiral of the White in 1842.
